North Florida RMC Pharmacy 5S Project
This project focused on re-organizing the hospital pharmacy.
We evaluated workflows, changing how materials and paperwork moved through the pharmacy. This reduced accidents, mistakes and wasted time searching.
Pharmacists may be at different workstations every shift, so we standardized them all.
Key Issues Tackled by this Project
- Cluttered storage room, causing excessive movement and safety issues;
- Disorganized refrigerated medication storage, leading to searching;
- Cluttered buyer workstation with poor storage of meds to be returned; and
- Poor internal communication methods with buyer, causing dissatisfaction.

As part of our process improvement efforts, we engage the staff. Those closest to the work know best about what is causing stress in the system. By sharing best practices from other hospitals, staff can imagine how things could run more smoothly in their operations.
